Thomas Alva Edison-STEM class

Thomas Alva Edison
February 11, 1847
to
October 18, 1931

I chose Thomas Alva Edison as my Scientist Project because he was smart. He was an inventor and because I know him a little better and have been at his Edison Estate in Fort Myers, Florida. At his Estates I took science classes and I got to see his inventions, his laboratory, his wife's garden and the big Banyan tree which he was trying to make rubber from before he passed away.

Thomas Alva Edison was born in February 11,1847 in Milam, Ohio and died on October 18 1931. He only went to school 1 to 2 years and books say that one day his teacher called him "addled" and he went home crying. When his mom found out, she took him back to school and told the teacher that "he did not know what he was talking about". And then she got him out of school and homeschooled him and that's when he developed a love for reading books.

When he started growing up he started inventing and mixing chemicals and sometimes he scared his parents. Then he asked for permission to work at the train station when he was 12 years old. He then began to work and kept inventing and selling newspaper and became a telegrapher.

He was and is (even today) one of the most highly regarded American inventors. Thomas Edison's first inventions include an electric vote recorder and a stock ticker. When Thomas was 9 years old, he received a book on physics. Even then, he did not believe in all the experiments that were in the book until he tested them himself. He used the basement to do his experiments. Did you know that Thomas Edison was partially deaf? He said that it did not bother him because it helped him concentrate better. He also invented the phonograph and the long-lasting light bulb.
